Chris Denton is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). Chris has lived in Central Oregon for over 20 years and earned his graduate degree from OSU’s Cascades Campus. Chris began working with children and mental health in the 1990s. While Chris continues to work with children/teens/youth and family; his services have expanded to reach adults, athletes, first responders and those experience trauma/injury.
Chris also holds an undergraduate degree in Environmental Science from OSU Corvallis. Prior to being a therapist, Chris worked on Superfund and ski area development projects. Chris routinely contributes his time to outreach; he has served as a board member for the Family Access Network, and has been a contributing panel member for the Patient Safety Movement Foundation.
My Story
Chris combines over15 years of therapeutic training and experience, utilizing multiple therapeutic modalities and approaches to support his clients to reach their goals. He is the Owner and Clinical Director of Heartwood Therapeutics for the past 10+ years.
Chris' work began as a child therapist. While Chris continues to support children and their families, his work has expanded to include adults, first responders, TBI, trauma, and neurodevelopmental disorders including ADHD and autism spectrum.
Chris routinely assists clients throughout the lifespan. This may include supporting one as they adjust to immediate life stressors (such as grieving the loss of a loved one, job displacement, relationship concerns, or adjusting to middle school); as well as working through complex trauma (including childhood trauma) and multiple diagnostic impressions. Chris regularly works with common adjustment stressors as well as symptoms of PTSD/trauma, anxiety, depression, ADHD, OCD, autism spectrum, and reactive attachment disorder.
Chris is trained in and regularly utilizes evidence-based practices, including EMDR, Internal Family Systems (IFS), psychodynamic/narrative therapy, Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), TF-CBT, ABFT, and CPC-CBT therapy. He will also include more traditional CBT and behavioral approaches to support his clients to reach their goals.
Chris has experience working with professional athletes, concussions/injury, high profile cases, first responders, veterans, and teachers. Chris also brings experience working through the clarification/reunification process in abuse cases. Chris is a Supervisor and oversees Registered Associates working towards licensure.
Chris lives in Bend with his wife and their two children. Chris makes time to enjoy skiing and travel throughout the great Western United States with his family. No longer coaching, he enjoys watching his play soccer and softball. When not traveling or enjoying sport, Chris finds time for cooking, live music, and the occasional art or construction project.
